Walking Town DC tours returns to Capitol Hill and Eastern Market this weekend

Tuesday, September 16th, 2008

WASHINGTON, DC (September 16, 2008)–The September 2008 fall edition of the popular Walking Town DC tours returns to Capitol Hill and Eastern Market this weekend.

The Saturday, September 20, tour: “Capitol Hill” meets outside the Eastern Market Metro station at 7th Street & Pennsylvania Avenue, SE, at 10 a.m. and runs until Noon. Reservations are required and can be made by calling 202-661-7581.

The Sunday, September 21, tour: “Capitol Hill and the Landmark Eastern Market” also meets at Eastern Market Metro at 10 a.m. continuing through 11:30 a.m. Reservations are not required.

As was the inaugural Sunday walk in April, it will be led by Carole Kolker and presented by Cultural Tourism DC. The tour will “trace the evolution of the 135-year-old Eastern Market from the Navy Yard to its present location, a Victorian- style masterpiece designed by political radical and architect Adolph Cluss. Hear stories about market culture and how, despite a ravaging fire in 2007, local efforts have persisted in maintaining this vital neighborhood hub, where shoppers are greeted by the familiar faces of generations of vendors.”

The inaugural walk featuring Eastern Market was supported in part byThe Capitol Hill Restoration Society, The Flea Market at Eastern Market and the Capitol Hill Community Foundation.

D.C. gets $2M to rehabilitate Eastern Market

Tuesday, September 16th, 2008

The District of Columbia has received a $2 million investment check from the U.S. Economic Development Administration to help restore and upgrade the fire-damaged Eastern Market.

EDA Director of Legislative and Intergovernmental Affairs Patty Sheetz, Chairman of the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee James Oberstar, and Del. Eleanor Holmes Norton presented the check Tuesday morning.

“Besides restoring an indispensible and popular neighborhood amenity, this grant to the District will enable visitors to the city to resume the practice of placing the market on the same ‘must-see’ list with the historic monuments downtown,” said Norton.

The grant money will fund updated ventilation systems and sprinklers.

The 135-year-old market, located at 7th and C streets SE, was designed by architect Adolph Cluss, who designed many post-Civil War buildings in D.C.
