Community Meeting on the Future of Hine Jr. High
Councilmember Tommy Wells is hosting a community meeting on the future of the Hine Jr. High site. The school is scheduled to close at the end of this school year and Tommy is creating a community process to develop a shared vision for the site. Several leading civic organizations and associations have outlined core principals to be included and this meeting will create an opportunity for community input. The Deputy Mayors for Education and Planning and Economic Development, as well as the Office on Planning will participate in this meeting. As the current site of Eastern market related business activity, it is important for EMCAC to participate in this meeting as well.
The meeting will be held Wednesday, April 30, 7:00 - 8:30 pm at Hine Jr. High School, 335 8th Street, SE. Please feel free to pass this announcement along to other interested parties.
Thanks,
Donna Scheeder, Chair

| Tuesday, 04 September 2007 |
As many devoted Eastern Market fans will remember, Eastern Market Pottery has been looking for a new location ever since fire and smoke damaged the classroom and workshop above the north hall. Just a week after the opening of the temporary East Hall, an announcement has been made by Eastern Market Pottery that it will hold its first classes beginning on Monday, Sept. 10th. They have found a new home at 320 3rd Street NE - please note the entrance is at the rear.Eastern Market Pottery’s Chuck Brome reports that they expect to have over 20 former students return to their classes for the first time since April. They are advertising and looking for new students as well. He adds, “We are still putting equipment in place and stocking clay and glaze materials. Storage has been at several locations and bringing it all together to make an efficient workshop/class studio is ongoing.”How do you contact them at their new digs to find out more? Brome says its best to contact them at 202-544-6669. It’s currently being routed to his cell phone, but it will soon become their landline. |

Bringing Eastern Market Back:
Sounds, Pictures, and Historic Preservation
We can’t bring back 135 years of wonderful smells that had collected in pre-fire Eastern Market, but we can bring back some of the sounds—and with them, some of the life of Eastern Market. Perhaps we can use the sounds of the old market as a guide to the re-building of this lively public space, built in 1872-73 by German-born architect Adolf Cluss (1825-1905).
Thursday, September 6, 6:30 – 8:30 pm
The Goethe-Institut hosts a panel discussion about the role played by historic preservationists in the restoration of Eastern Market. We will see archival photos and listen to audio recorded at Eastern Market for the Adolf Cluss project, along with sounds from the public market in the architect’s German hometown, Heilbronn.
Panelists:
Tanya Beauchamp, Historian and Historic Preservationist, specialist on Cluss buildings
Baird Smith, AIA, FAPT, Quinn Evans Architects, overseeing the restoration of Eastern Market
Alex van Oss, Audio producer
Monte Edwards, Eastern Market Advisory Committee
Joseph Browne, director, Adolf Cluss Exhibition Project
Bill Gilcher, moderator
No charge. RSVP to 202-289-1200 ext. 163

Stolen from our friends at DCist.com
As a symbol of Eastern Market’s recovery from the fire that destroyed its main building in April, the Capitol Hill Community Foundation, which established the Eastern Market Fund to aid in the restoration process, is sponsoring a concert series that will begin on July 22.
The Eastern Market Music series will present Washington area blues, bluegrass, jazz, contemporary, and international musicians. The shows will run on Sundays through the end of September and will take place at the corner of 7th & North Carolina, S.E., outside of Port City Java.
The opening concert is scheduled to begin at 10:30 a.m. this Sunday with traditional blues musicians Rick Franklin and Michael Baytop. The Resonators, an acoustic roots ensemble, will complete the bill. A full schedule of the Eastern Market Music series, including performers, dates and times is now available on the Capitol Hill Community Foundation web site.
